This seminar examined the African Union’s February 2024 adoption of the Protocol on the Right to a Nationality and the Eradication of Statelessness in Africa. The protocol addresses issues including ensuring the right to a nationality, preventing arbitrary deprivation of citizenship, eradicating statelessness, and resolving nationality challenges affecting nomadic and cross-border populations, and sets out a legal framework for states. Two years after its adoption, the webinar explored its history, including relevant jurisprudence and political discussions within the African Union, and reviewed its content, as well as prospects for ratification and implementation.
