have a stake in the polity to come, why should we commit ourselves to making it better? This kind of argument is morally bereft. We can continue to
care about the future and attend to the damages we, and our ancestors, have
wrought, even if, or precisely because, our political membership is limited
by our mortality. It was, of course, ever thus.
