This webinar on gender discrimination in nationality laws highlighted that over 45 countries still maintain rules that treat women and men unequally. In 24 countries, women cannot confer nationality on their children on the same basis as men, making this discrimination a root cause of statelessness. Speakers shared examples from Sierra Leone, Malaysia, Eswatini and Syria, showing both legal reform and ongoing harm, including barriers to education, healthcare and documentation. Participants stressed that equal nationality rights are essential for human rights, development, and ensuring no child is left without a nationality.
