9 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY EXTREME VULNERABILITY • The fieldwork uncovered statelessness’ harsh emotional and psychological impact on those who fall into this category. A large proportion of respondents expressed the need for psychosocial support. • Societal judgement and discrimination against stateless persons push many to avoid openly disclosing their situation. Meanwhile, their entangled status causes extreme tension and pressure on their family environment. • The vulnerability attached to statelessness is amplified by additional layers of complication. Girls and women are victims of gender discrimination, making it especially difficult to secure an education or access the job market. • Migrant domestic workers (MDWs), whose children have been identified among the stateless persons in Greater Lebanon and Mount Lebanon (nonregistered from Lebanese fathers), are confronted by a triple vulnerability. In addition to gender stigma, MDWs – who are predominantly female - are victims of the Kafala system, a sponsorship system that facilitates modern slavery and gives those entrapped within it a precarious legal status that prevents them from registering their children of Lebanese descent. © 2023 Siren Associates.
