16 THE STATELESSNESS LEXICON This study relies upon a technical lexicon specific to the statelessness phenomenon in general and relating to the Lebanese context in particular. IDENTIFICATION DOCUMENTS ISSUED BY THE GDGS Laissezpasser Biometric laissez-passer passports are provided to stateless individuals for international travel. They are valid for up to three years for understudy cases and one year for MeQ with the possibility of renewal for up to three years with approval from the General Security. Under-study card Granted for understudy cases and their children, for local travels. Courtesy Residence Granted to under-study individuals, their spouses, husbands, and children, as well as to families of Lebanese citizens, immigrants who were born in Lebanon but are not registered there, and other citizens for various reasons. Ta’arif card IDENTIFICATION DOCUMENTS ISSUED BY MUKHTARS An identification document granted by mukhtars to Lebanese stateless. The criteria for granting them are randomly and discretionary set by the mukhtars themselves. Ta’arif certificate It is an updated form of the ta’arif card.
