Description: This summary highlights statelessness-related challenges in countries reviewed during the 51st Session of the Universal Periodic Review (January 2026), including Micronesia, Lebanon, Mauritania, Nauru, Rwanda, Nepal, Saint Lucia, Oman, Austria, Australia, Georgia, Saint Kitts and Nevis, and Sao Tome and Principe. It notes discrimination in nationality laws, arbitrary deprivation of nationality, and gaps in children’s access to nationality, as well as that several states are not parties to the 1954 or 1961 Statelessness Conventions and lack safeguards against childhood statelessness. Proposed recommendations include reforming gender-discriminatory nationality laws, ensuring universal birth registration, improving statelessness determination procedures and legal aid, preventing detention and arbitrary loss of nationality, and strengthening data collection. States are urged to use these issues when formulating UPR recommendations.
