This article outlines Burkina Faso’s initiatives to tackle the problem of unregistered newborns. The iCivil system uses a bracelet with a unique ID and a mobile app to register births immediately through health workers. In parallel, the government is testing CITOYEN, a software-only solution that functions similarly but without a bracelet. CITOYEN is undergoing trials before potential nationwide rollout. Until one of these systems is fully adopted, many children remain without official civil status, leaving them vulnerable to exclusion from basic rights and services.
