As noted by one former Australian student, Hanna: ‘On a practical level, I am thankful to have been given the opportunity to play a part in bringing about real, tangible change to stateless clients within our community. In particular, being able to meet with some of these clients towards the end of the semester was a group Clinic activity I will forever cherish.’ cxxiii Meeting the Italian Stateless Legal Clinics highlighted the powerful potential of university based legal services. On one hand the programs help bridge the gap in access to legal services for stateless communities, while also educating young people, future lawyers and leaders on the importance of addressing this issue. The workshop also provided potential for future collaboration and networking between Italian and Australian university students working on this issue which I intend to investigate further. The workshop also provided the foundation for future collaboration with supervisors of the respective Italian clinics where we discussed future joint projects and networks that will strengthen the work on this issue of the Stateless Legal Clinic in Australia. (b) Roundtable: Experts from peak bodies working on statelessness in Italy Enrico Guida, Protection Associate (Statelessness) United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Italy Armando Augello Cupi, President of the Italian Stateless Union Giulia Perin – Lawyer working with the Stateless Legal Clinics, Member of Association for Juridical Studies on Migration (ASGI) Francesco Portoghese – A Buon Dirittocxxiv Sarah Reggio – Senior Protection Associate, UNHCR Italy The UNHCR Italy office raises awareness about statelessness and advocates for stronger protections for stateless persons, including safeguards against statelessness at birth and improving statelessness determination procedures.cxxv It also undertakes partnerships with stakeholders to assist training events and civil society networks.cxxvi UNHCR facilitates Tavolo Apolidia, the 'Working Table on Statelessness', a network of NGOs and experts addressing statelessness in Italy, focusing on coordinating advocacy activities.cxxvii The roundtable was a valuable opportunity to connect with and learn from key organisations and individuals working on statelessness in Italy. 60
