Lawyers for Human Rights (LHR) is a South African non-governmental organisation committed to promoting and protecting human rights and access to justice. Through its Statelessness Unit, established in 2011 with the support of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), LHR has pioneered efforts to combat statelessness in South Africa. The Unit engages in strategic litigation, advocacy, and legal empowerment to advance the right to nationality. Recognising the need for regional and national collaboration, LHR founded the Southern African Nationality Network (SANN) in 2016 and the South African Network on Statelessness (SANS) in 2020 to mobilise civil society efforts in addressing statelessness.
