In March and April 2024, over a month before the ruler, Mishal Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, issued
the decree forming the Supreme Committee for the Investigation of Kuwaiti Nationality
(the Supreme Committee), “the government issued 13 decisions and three decrees
stripping citizenship from 63 people, including 23 women”, including political
dissidents. 73 Below we set out a fuller timeline of revocation events.
The actions of the Supreme
Committee for the Investigation of
Kuwaiti Nationality may be
considered to have violated 10-15
rights and freedoms set out in,
amongst other treaties, the ICCPR
and the CEDAW.
The January 2026 revocation of the
citizenship of Kuwaitʼs own
ambassador to London exemplifies
the arbitrariness and absurdity of
Kuwaitʼs citizenship revocation
campaign. The GoK revoked the
citizenship of (former) Ambassador
Badr Mohammed al-Awadhi on
intergenerational grounds (for
more on this type of revocation, see
Snapshot 2, below): the authorities
posthumously revoked - apparently
on the allegation of fraudulent
acquisition - the nationality of his
father, Mohammed Ibrahim alAwadhi, a former security officer. 74
The GoKʼs 2024-5 citizenship
revocation campaign has affected
all strata of society.
Anecdotal evidence suggests that most Kuwaitis know a family that is affected: the
number of wives impacted is many tens of thousands alone; with dependents, the total
number rises exponentially. Every week between March 2024 and December 2025, the GoK
published, seemingly on an ad hoc basis, vast lists of newly denaturalised people.
Receiving no official communication from the GoK, Kuwaitis learned of their status by
being denied access to their own bank accounts, being informed by their employer or a
financial institution or sometimes by seeing their names on lists of revocations on
Instagram. On other occasions, victims had to request access to the list of denaturalised
people on Kuwait al-Youm, the Official Gazette. The government generally did not inform
people; those impacted had to scan for their own names or those of friends and family in
the lists published in the Official Gazette. 75
