Description: This article explores how law and practice on citizenship deprivation is to be evaluated against contemporary standards of international law, starting from the observation that inequality in citizenship status is increasing — particularly in the context of citizenship stripping as a counter-terrorism measure. It highlights how states often apply revocation powers unequally, disproportionately targeting naturalised and dual citizens, and argues that such practices raise serious concerns under international norms such as the prohibition of arbitrary deprivation of nationality and the principle of non-discrimination. The article ultimately questions the legitimacy of using citizenship deprivation as a security tool and reflects on its broader implications for liberal democratic values.
