Joint Submission to the Human Rights Council at the 54th Session of the Universal Periodic Review. SOUTH SUDAN Introduction 1. Animu Athiei Foundation, Hold the Child, the Centre for Inclusive Governance, Peace and Justice (CIGPJ), the Institute for Human Rights and Development in Africa (IHRDA), the Eastern Africa Nationality Network (EANN), the Pan African Nationality Network (PANN), the Global Movement Against Statelessness (GMAS) and the Institute on Statelessness and Inclusion (ISI) make this joint submission to the Universal Periodic Review (UPR), on the right to a nationality and human rights challenges pertaining to statelessness in South Sudan. 2. Animu Athiei Foundation is a South Sudanese non-profit organization dedicated to advancing human rights, with a particular focus on the right to nationality and the prevention of statelessness. Drawn from the lived experience of our Founder, the Foundation works through policy advocacy, legislative engagement, coalition building, strategic public interest litigation, and evidence-based research to promote inclusive legal and policy frameworks that protect the rights of all individuals. By collaborating with government institutions, civil society, development partners, and affected communities, Animu Athiei Foundation seeks to strengthen citizenship rights, advance access to justice, foster social inclusion, and contribute to accountable governance and sustainable peace in South Sudan. 3. Hold the Child is a South Sudan-based organization that is trailblazing an African for Africa movement for social change in how the Continent nurtures its children. Their mission is to strengthen the resilience and capacity of families and communities to meet their obligations to the child through community-centred child survival and development initiatives. 4. The Centre for Inclusive Governance, Peace and Justice (CIGPJ) is a South Sudanbased organization that empowers citizens to participate in governance, decision making, and leadership at all levels, protect and defend South Sudan as a nation founded on justice and accountability, respect for human dignity and gender, and good governance through awareness raising, capacity building, policy formulation, legislative review, and institutional reform. 1
