Acknowledgements The research for this book began two weeks before the largest wave of genocidal violence in Myanmar against Rohingya in 2017. I am very grateful to Professor Penny Green and Dr Thomas MacManus, not only for their important intellectual and practical guidance but also for their kindness and support for all through turbulent times. Thanks to my husband, Zarni, for his encouragement, energy, and support. He showed me that emotion, passion, and a thirst for justice are integral to scholarship. It is this that keeps us moving forwards amid the debilitating pain and suffering of others. The research for this book would not have been possible without the many Rohingya who helped me with my research or participated in it. My thanks and respect to them reach far beyond the lifetime of the research. They shared with me their time, their knowledge, their pain, their hopes and fears, their friendship, their contacts, and their language skills—all the while providing me with the most incredible hospitality and warmth. I would like to especially thank Sharifah Shakirah, Mohammed S. Anwar, Ali Johar, Neza Mudden, Hussein Johar, Nurul Haque, Khin Maung, Nay San Lwin, Tun Khin, and others who were central to this work but have chosen not to be named.
