UNHCR Italy have played an innovative and leading role in addressing statelessness through spearheading and funding the university based stateless legal clinics above. It was inspiring to see how tangible action on statelessness can be led by national UNHCR offices; in this case driven by Statelessness Protection Associate Enrico Guida. The UNHCR Italy office should also be commended for their support in the establishment of Italian Stateless Union, discussed below. It was also useful to meet with Giulia Perin, a lawyer who partners with the Rome-based L-R: Sarah Reggio (UNHCR), Francesco Poroghese (A Buon Dirtto), Giulia Perin (Lawyer with Stateless Legal Clinics, stateless legal clinic and assists in the direct Katie Robertson (SLC Australia), Armando Augello Cupi, supervision of the students. My discussion with (Stateless Legal Clinic), Enrico Guida, UNHCR) her provided me with valuable insights and ideas as to how partnerships with solicitors in private legal firms in Australia may partner with the Stateless Legal Clinic in increasing its capacity. UNHCR and Partner Organisation Roundtable, Rome Finally, it was invaluable to meet with Armand Augello Cupu, President of the Italian Stateless Union.cxxviii Armad generously shared his own experience of statelessness with me and his drive to help address the issue through his work with the Italian Stateless Union. The Italian Stateless Union was established in 2022 and is the first stateless-led organisation in Italy. It aims to raise awareness of the issue and provide a platform for stateless (and formerly stateless) people to advocate on issues affecting them. There is currently no stateless-led organisation in Australia bridging the gap between government and stateless people in targeted consultation.cxxix Learning about the scope of the Italian Stateless Union’s work provided valuable insights into how a similar organisation may be established in Australia, as did my meetings with members of United Stateless in America, discussed below. 61
