There needs to be adequate supervision of compliance with such provisions, including through complaints mechanisms and the possibility of judicial review and restitution of nationality. How can UNHCR support? • • • Promote international standards relating to nondiscrimination, the right to nationality and the prohibition of arbitrary deprivation of nationality. Identify situations of direct or indirect discrimination that have led or could lead to individual or mass denial or deprivation of nationality. Undertake timely interventions with relevant government ministries and parliaments to prevent future instances of denial, loss and deprivation of nationality or, if it has already occurred, to ensure restitution of nationality in accordance with Action 1. This includes advocating and providing technical advice for the reform of nationality • • laws that have provisions permitting denial, loss or deprivation of nationality on discriminatory grounds. Where possible, use Constitutional reform processes as an opportunity to achieve these objectives. Coordinate with other UN Agencies and regional human rights bodies to intervene in instances of denial, loss and deprivation of nationality on discriminatory grounds. Provide affected populations with information, legal advice and legal aid, assist with monitoring the restitution of nationality and the implementation of reformed nationality laws.
