HUMANS WITHOUT RIGHTS
“Warsheh” team for advocacy and
documentation has been working on the
issue of Syrian statelessness since 2017 by
monitoring cases of women married to foreign fighters who entered Syria in order to
fight against the Syrian regime. After several questionnaires and meetings of the initiative team inside Syria, it became clear that
the problem is not only the statelessness of
children as a result of marriage to foreign
fighters, but also their loss of lineage. Therefore they are undeclared and do not have
the most basic rights, especially because
their fathers are unknown in name and lineage in most cases. In addition, the entry of
foreign fighters to fight in Syria, did not only
take place in areas outside the control of the
regime, but also included the entire Syrian
territory, as many foreign fighters entered to
fight alongside the regime as well.
The initiative also monitored cases of
Syrian female survivors who were raped inside detention centers, which resulted in the
birth of children to unknown fathers, who
will not be recognized by the Syrian regime
as it will confirm one of the crimes committed in its detention centers against female
detainees. Here, we have to recall that the
use of rape as a weapon is not limited to the
regime’s detention centers, but it was used
in all detention facilities in Syria, according
to many testimonies obtained by the team.
