HOMES TO SURVIVE. CONFLICT DISPLACED ABOUT 3.3
MILLION, OF WHOM AN ESTIMATED 1.9 MILLION REMAINED IN
SOUTH SUDAN AND 1.4 MILLION FLED AS REFUGEES TO
NEIGHBOURING COUNTRIES, ALTOGETHER ABOUT 1 OUT OF
EVERY 4 SOUTH SUDANESE HAS BEEN DISPLACED. MORE

HOSTED IN NEIGHBOURING COUNTRIES, WITH VERY FEW
SEEKING PROTECTION FARTHER AFIELD.
South Sudan became independent in July 2011, following wars
that claimed over 2.5 million lives. Unfortunately, fighting
erupted in late 2013 in the streets of the capital, Juba. Before
long, the conflict spread to the three states of Greater Upper
Nile. Since then, despite numerous talks and ceasefires,
hostilities have engulfed the whole country. Large scale violence
broke out in Juba in July 2016, which spread across the country,
including to the formerly more peaceful areas of Equatoria, and
accelerated new displacements.
