I. Study
The Caribbean Migrants Observatory (OBMICA, in
Spanish) carried out a qualitative study on the impacts of COVID-19 on the Haitian migrant population
and their descendants who live in border region communities belonging to the Enriquillo sub-region. The
subregion is located in the southwestern part of the
Dominican Republic, and comprises the provinces
of Barahona, Pedernales, Independencia, and Bahoruco. Together these four provinces cover an area of
6,961.43 km². It is also one of the poorest regions in
the country, with the lowest human development indi-
cators (adjusted for inequality) in the country (UNDP
2013), despite the wealth it produces in terms of its
contributions to national agricultural production.
In October 2020, an OBMICA research team carried
out 50 semi-structured interviews with people of seven different documentation profiles, all of them parents of children born in Dominican territory in the last
five years. The following table provides an overview
of study participants, by documentatiOn profile and
gender.
