In Senegal, on 6 November 2024, UNHCR and Green Village Foundation conducted a birth registration awareness session for 150 primary and secondary school students in Dakar’s suburbs. The initiative empowered students to transition from awareness to action by engaging in concrete human rights advocacy. In Niger, in the Dosso region, the Defense and Security Forces (FDS) officials participated in a UNHCR training on international protection in mixed migration contexts and the fight against statelessness. In the Tahoua region, UNHCR and CIAUD conducted 28 awareness-raising sessions in the fourth quarter of 2024, reaching 1,285 refugees, internally displaced persons, and host community members. The sessions covered the importance of civil status certificates, identity documents, and nationality certificates. In the Maradi region, outreach activities reached 1,336 people and identified 741 individuals at risk of statelessness. Six individuals were immediately referred to the communal civil registration service in Guidan Sori for assistance. UNHCR Yemen shared a success story on its social media platforms about the legal team’s efforts in securing identity documents for elderly twins Hassan and Hussain in Sana’a. Homeless after heavy rains destroyed their shelter and lacking valid IDs, they were unable to access temporary accommodation and had to sleep in a vehicle until their neighbours secured them a room. Through legal representation and facilitation of their application process, the UNHCR team ensured their access to identity documents.
