Description: Lawyers for Human Rights (LHR) and the Institute on Statelessness and Inclusion (ISI) made this joint submission to the Committee on the Rights of the Child (CRC), on the right to a nationality and human rights challenges pertaining to statelessness in South Africa.

This submission focuses on: I. Discriminatory application of the pre-requisite of birth registration; II. The lack of regulations to implement Section 2(2) of the Citizenship Act; III. Loss, deprivation and renunciation of citizenship; IV. Acquisition of citizenship through naturalisation; V. The requirement that the parents of the child have documentation; VI. Restrictive time limit; VII. Restrictions on guardians registering the births of children; VIII. Additional conditions for children born outside of hospitals; IX. Children born out of wedlock; Foundlings; and X. Lack of legislation to protect vulnerable children.
