Individuals who are potentially stateless or potentially at risk of statelessness are
present in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.
CMS’s provisional estimates indicate that the US population of individuals that are potentially
stateless or potentially at risk of statelessness is 52.6 percent male and 47.4 percent female.
About 55 percent of those over age-15 are married.
While many are relatively new arrivals —45.1 percent have resided in the United States less than
5 years—18.2 percent have lived in the United States for 20 or more years (see Chart 3 below).
Many of the newer arrivals were born in Nepal, Bhutan, Thailand, and Myanmar. Many likely
arrived as refugees and possess permanent residency. Those who have lived in the United States
for 20 years or more are mostly Hmong from Laos and Thailand and persons from the former
Soviet Union and Yugoslavia.
