About Karina and Samantha: Karina Ambartsoumian-Clough is the executive director of United Stateless. Her story and background are included in more detail in part (VI). Samantha Sitterley is a licensed attorney in the State of Colorado. Samantha joined the USL team as our first ever Staff Attorney in October 2022. My Visit with Karina and Samantha: Spending time with Karina and Samantha was an absolute highlight of my Churchill Fellowship and I am incredibly grateful to both for the two days they set aside to meet and host me, and to Samantha for travelling from Colorado for our time together. Thank you to Karina for welcoming me so graciously to her hometown. Karina was immensely generous in sharing her journey with me, and insights into the establishment, operation and future direction of United Stateless. She also provided valuable insights into United Stateless’ effective advocacy and political engagement strategy. It was extremely valuable to connect with Samantha to learn more about United Stateless’ relatively new legal program and share learnings. Samantha and I look forward to continuing to work together on legal service provision for stateless people. In 2024 we will work together in a joint panel on our respective work at the World Conference on Statelessness and are currently discussing the potential establishment of a global network of stateless legal clinics. I also hope to welcome Samantha, and potentially other members of United Stateless, to the Australian Stateless Legal Clinic in the near future where we can continue to share learnings. The meeting also resulted in various ideas for potential future collaboration designed to raise awareness about statelessness in Australia, such as through hosting an Australian screening of United Stateless’ recent film, ‘Citizens of Nowhere’ (link below).
