to visit the Roma community in the Scampia Camp on the outskirts of Naples in Italy, was a particularly powerful experience and I am grateful to the leaders and members of the community for welcoming me to their homes and sharing their experiences with me. It was invaluable to see the law students of the Italian Stateless Legal Clinics at the Federico II University Naples, led by Professor Flora Di Donato, working in the Camp to bring about positive change and consulting with the community members in an empowering and collaborative manner.xxiii The ability to spend time with members of the trailblazing organisation United Stateless (an organisation founded and led L-R: Karina Ambartsoumian-Clough (United Stateless), Katie by stateless people in the United States) Robertson (SLC Australia) and Samantha Sitterley (United Stateless), October 2023 confirmed the vital importance of ensuring advocacy and reform on this issue in Australia is driven by stateless people.xxiv I remain committed to supporting the establishment of a similar impact lead organisation for stateless people in Australia to drive change on this issue. I was similarly inspired to learn about the work of the Italian Stateless Union (Unione Italiana Apolidi), led by President Armando Augello Cupi, who shared his story of statelessness and the work of the Union with me during an informative and fun meeting with himself and a group of impressive individuals working on the issue in Italy.xxv The leadership of UNHCR Italy’s Enrico Guida in meaningfully addressing and supporting the Italian Statelessness Legal Clinics is to be commended.
