Pledges 2011 - Ministerial Intergovernmental Event on Refugees and Stateless Persons
The Government of Sierra Leone pledges to:
1) Issue ID cards to all refugees in Sierra Leone. Discussions for the issuance of identity cards are ongoing between the National Refugee
Authority, National Registration Secretariat and UNHCR Freetown.
2) Revise the land agreement signed in 2010 to facilitate the construction of shelters for refugees integrating locally in rural communities. The revision will better define its scope and improve areas of contention in the original draft.
3) Issue proper land documentation for refugees who opt for local
integration in urban areas. The National Commission for Social Action (NaCSA) will follow-up with the Ministry of Lands for the provision of such documentation to NaCSA as the custodian, with a
view to developing a framework for the eventual handing over of
these land documents to the beneficiaries.
4) Review and amend the Refugee Protection Act of 2007 to ensure
effective implementation of the Act.
Pledges relating to statelessness
The Government of Sierra Leone pledges to:
Examine the 1954 and 1961 Statelessness Conventions in light of the several
amendments to its citizenship law, with a view to signing the Conventions
as soon as possible.
SOMALIA
PLEDGE FORM
In today's commemorations of the United Nations conventions related
to the protection of refugees and stateless persons, Somalia is expressing
gratitude to those countries that have offered international protection and
assistance to its citizens forced to cross Somali borders due to persisting
fighting in some parts of the country.
Ravaged by two decades of conflict, the current fighting continues to take
a heavy toll on the civilian population that remains in the country. There
are approximately 1.4 million internally displaced persons inside Somalia
who have been forced to flee their homes because of violence and insecurity, and who are currently in dire need of humanitarian assistance, including durable solutions to their plight.
