During this webinar held on the side-lines of the UN General Assembly, UN Women, UNDP, UNHCR, and the Global Campaign for Equal Nationality Rights called for reform of nationality laws that discriminate on the basis of gender. Twenty-five countries retain laws denying women the right to confer citizenship to their children on an equal basis with men, and over fifty countries have gender-discriminatory provisions, often restricting women’s ability to pass nationality to non-citizen spouses. Panellists discussed lessons from reform efforts to end legal discrimination against women and highlighted the broad benefits of gender-equal nationality laws for families and communities.
