Legal briefing: Statelessness and the right to respect for private and family life October 2024 This briefing is published and authored by the European Network on Statelessness (ENS) and The AIRE Centre. ENS is a civil society alliance of over 180 organisations and individual experts in 41 countries committed to addressing statelessness in Europe. Everyone has the right to a nationality. ENS believes this must be respected and that the human rights of people who lack a nationality – stateless people – must be protected. ENS is dedicated to working with stateless people in Europe to advocate for their rights and aims to reach its goals through law and policy development, awareness-raising, and capacity-building. ENS is very grateful to all who gave their time and expertise to reviewing and commenting on drafts of this briefing. We also wish to acknowledge the contribution of ENS members and other lawyers who have provided case summaries to the Statelessness Case Law Database, and/or who support our impact litigation efforts across Europe. In particular, we wish to acknowledge the ongoing contribution of the AIRE Centre as a key impact litigation partner. The AIRE Centre is a London based legal charity which uses the power of European and international law to protect the rights of extremely vulnerable people. The publication of this briefing was supported in part by a grant from the Open Society Foundations. ENS would also like to acknowledge the financial support and time contributions through our pro-bono partnerships with a number of law firms, including Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP, DAC Beachcroft, Fragomen, Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, Herbert Smith Freehills, Hogan Lovells and DLA Piper which is essential to the development and continuous improvement of the Statelessness Case Law Database. The development of the database has also been made possible through allocation of funding from various other donors, including the Open Society Justice Initiative, Oak Foundation, Sigrid Rausing Trust, Rosa-Luxemburg-Stiftung and the UN Refugee Agency, for which we are sincerely grateful. 45
